MOHAMED ZAIN SULAIMAN,Born in Aberdeen, Scotland and raised partly in Saudi Arabia, Zain is a fluent linguist in Arabic, English and Malay with a diverse cultural background.
Zain has been a professional English-Arabic-Malay translator and interpreter since 1995. He has translated and interpreted both locally and internationally for various government and private agencies including the Malaysian Prime Minister's Department,Tourism
Malaysia, Petronas, Malaysian Airlines, Leo Burnett, Ogilvy & Mather, J. Walter Thompson Malaysia, M&C Saatchi, University College London, Coca-Cola, OIC, and NAM.
He was employed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Saudi Arabia in one of its diplomatic missions for over ten years. He was first appointed as Chief Translator & Interpreter in 1995 and later as Researcher in 2001. In 2008, he joined Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia as a lecturer in Translation Studies and Arabic and subsequently as a senior lecturer in 2014 and an associate professor in 2022.
Zain specializes in Translation and Intercultural Studies. His current research interests are tourism translation, advertising and promotional translation, cross-cultural analysis as well as translation and interpreting professionalisation.
He obtained an MSc. in Arabic-English-Arabic Translation & Interpreting from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh in 1998, and a PhD of Arts (Translation Studies) from Monash University, Australia in 2014.
Although based currently in academia, Zain continues to engage withthe translation industry as a professional translation practitioner and maintains close relations with key stakeholders particularly the Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books.
